Height decides the class; weight can veto it
Most residential ceilings through about 11 ft land on an 11 ft lift if the sheet stays under 150 lb. Rooms from just over 11 ft through 16 ft need the taller class. A correct height class still fails if the estimated panel weight exceeds 150 lb or the sheet is larger than 4×16 ft.

Area (ft²) × approximate gypsum density: 1/2 in regular ≈ 1.7 lb/sq ft; 5/8 in Type X ≈ 2.3 lb/sq ft. Example: 4×8 × 1.7 ≈ 54 lb; 4×12 × 2.3 ≈ 110 lb; 4×16 × 2.3 ≈ 147 lb. These are shopping estimates — weigh wet or specialty boards if your brand differs.
